NED Government Engineering College was setup in 1921 and upgraded as NED University of Engineering & Technology in 1977. Over a period of hundred years, NED has educated and trained quality of graduates, serving society and humanity across the globe. Today, NED University is recognized as a place of excellence in higher education and scientific research all around the world.
Thar Institute of Engineering, Sciences & Technology (TIEST) was constituted by NED University at Mithi city of district Tharparkar, Sindh which is around 350 km towards East from Karachi. The purpose of this institute is to raise high quality professionals from the remote deprived people of this district and surrounding areas, and to provide qualified workforce for rapidly developing coal excavation and power generation industries in this area of the province.
TIEST was established in year 2019 with BS Computer Science programme followed by Civil Engineering programme started in year 2021. Other Engineering programmes including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Mining Engineering will be started soon in the subsequent years.
TIEST is currently placed in temporary buildings which will eventually be shifted to its main campus which is under construction at a land of around 300 acres on the main road leading to Islamkot and it is almost in the mid of Mithi and Islamkot cities. The main campus of TIEST is also at a reasonable distance from the Airport.
Air-conditioned classrooms equipped with multi-media, World class latest laboratory equipment, Libraries, Book Bank, Digital library, remote access to the Abul kalam library of NED University, High Tech computer laboratories equipped with latest software, 24 hours Internet, Wi-Fi facility, transport and hostel facilities are the silent features of TIEST. HEC donated world class smart classroom is one of the unique facilities of TIEST. Worldwide live lectures, seminars, conferences and meetings can be conducted using this state-of-the-art facility.
In order to maintain the quality of education, qualified faculty is hired as per prescribed standard of Higher Education commission Pakistan. TIEST is a constituent collage of NED University, therefore all of the supporting departments of NED University equally facilitate TIEST. The department of student affairs NED University offers and awards scholarships to the deserving students of TIEST through private funded donors, govt., etc. The Directorate of Industrial Liaison NED University arranges internship, industrial visits and on-campus job interviews for TIEST students. All rules and regulations of NED university are followed here at TIEST in administration, teaching, and examinations systems. Regular trainings, audits, Check and balance of Quality Enhancement Cell of NED University is also very helpful maintaining the standard of TIEST similar to the one followed at NED University.
The first principal of TIEST was Professor Dr. Muhammad Raza Mehdi who joined TIEST on October 2019. Professor Dr. Nasir Uddin Shaikh is the present principal of TIEST. After retirement of Dr. Mehdi, Dr. Shaikh was transferred from NED University and took charge as TIEST second principal on August 2022.
